Short note on cubital fossa

Cubital fossa

It is triangular hollow space situated on the front of the elbow.

Boundaries

  • Laterally= medial border of of the brachioradialis.
  • Medilly=lateral border of the pronator teres.
  • Base=it is directed upwards and is represented by an imaginary line joining the front of two epicondyles of the humerus.
  • Apex = directed downwards,   & is formed by the area where brachioradialis crosses the pronator teres muscles.

Palmar Aponeurosis

  • Palmar aponeurosis is the deep fascia of the palm.
  • It covers the following structure;
  1. Superficial palmar arch
  2. Long flexor tendon
  3. Median nerve
  4. Ulnar nerve

 Features

  • It is triangular in shape. It has base and the apex.
  • The apex is proximal , blends with flexor retinaculum.
  • The base is directed distally and divides into superficial and deep strata.
  • Superficial is attached to the dermis
  • Deep strata divides into four slips for four digits medially.
  • Each slip divides into two parts which are contious with the fibrous flexor sheath.
  • From lateral and medial margins of the palmar aponeurosis, the lateral and medial palmar septa backwards and divides the palm into compartments.( Figure 9.16 BD chaurasia human anatomy).

 Functions

  1. Palmar aponeurosis fixes the skin of the palm and thus improves the grip.
  2. It protects the underlying tendons, vessels, and nerves.
